Hi.

Im posting for a friend of mine.

She has a betta almost 2 years of age. He was doing fine till about a week ago when he seemed very legarthic and hanging at the top.

It was then she noticed a tiny spot on his dorsal fin. She couldnt remember if it was always there or not.

now he sits at the top, just sitting there. Barely moves, but when he does, he sometimes swims erratically, in circles. He kind of flops from one side to another as he swims, like he doesn't have good balance anymore.

Started out like this..

Then he looked like this:

is it too late for him? :(

EDIT: some of those links dont work properly, cant fix it. you just have to copy and paste it. thanks

:-( My friend lost her 1.5 year old betta to a similar condition last November, except his spot was white. At first when she showed it to me I thought it was fungus but it was smooth and almost a perfect sphere. :( Now I think it was a tumor or something...

Has the betta been injured lately? Pebbles (my friends betta) jumped out of his cup during a water change a few days before his spot showed up.

Until you can determine EXACTLY what it is, I'd just keep his water clean and warm, add a good broad-spectrum med (Wardley's Promethyasul works for me) and a bit of aquarium salt.

Good luck, I hope he pulls through.

her response: "no, the spot came out of no where. I started noticing it one day and tried to remember if the spot had been there the whole time, but by looking at old pictures, it hasn't.. it didn't start as a wound, it started as a black spot that showed on his scales"

I guess just to make him comfortable as possible

The salt and meds might help... other than that yes, make him as comfy as possible. I hope he recovers...

That is so weird, i saw another person on here the other day with a fish that had a black tissue eating desease and no one could explain it...

Hmm, what meds has she been using? If it has been the stuff like melafix, pimafix, bettafix, etc with no luck, maybe you should bring in the big guns with macaryn, macaryn two, and colloidal silver.

shes been using bettafix with salt, and every other day water changes
Bettafix is just a watered-down version of Melafix. They're both great for helping grow back fins damaged from fin rot etc, but like Orky said, they're not strong enough to fight off serious infections like this. Maracyn I and Maracyn II would be good, and since it sounds like some form of fungal bacteria, Jungle Fungus Eliminator is another option.

I really hope the betta pulls through...
