i put up a black background on my tank today, and for the whole day my betta seemed to stay at the back swimming back and forth with his fins constantly all flared up. i dont want to stress him or make him unhealthy in anyway, do you think he will get used to the background being there and stop his flaring or should i make some changes ?

He is probably looking at his reflection, so he won't stop and he will just tire himself out.
Take out the background and replace it with a brighter one.

I found with a black background my bettas kept flaring at their own reflections too.
I took the background off & they stopped doing it, though one of them always flares at me when I go past the tank

oh i see, i thought that might be it, i wanted to put a background on my tank, the one i have has black on one side and darkish blue on the other, dont know wether it will make much difference being as its still kind of dark. thanks for the reply :)

Np, but try out the blue background and if he still flares then consider getting another background, or making one yourself :good:
Good luck!

thanks sona i will give it a try, i just wanted to put on a background momentarily as you can still see through the back of my tank i guess when all my plants have filled out a bit a background wont be as necessary and then i can just take it off and watch my problems float away :p lol

My betta flares at his reflection in my black background sometimes but I don't think it's hurting him. I know that if they have been flaring a lot they get marks on their cheeks and he hasn't got those so I'm thinking maybe he's doing it just an OK amount.

Having Plants as a background is one way to make a tank seem more "natural"
Good luck and keep us updated(with pics)

thanks for the reply almostawesome, i'll keep a close eye on him, its only been one day that he has been doing it so far, i'll see how he is tomorrow. i wouldnt mind if he does it now and then but it was constant and he chased the other fish if they got in his way, and i dont want to be causing problems

sona, i shall post some pics soon, i've not managed to egt a pic of my betta yet. shall get some up for you though :) and i'll keep you updated on the situation :)
