Betta Breeding

My female did that a couple of nights ago but she was dropping them as she swam around. Is she still floating? Where is the male?
All right she has recovered and is now swimming around, :D , should i feed her today and let her go tomorrow? she did get a little smaller than she was yesterday. thanks.

I would start feeding again tomorrow, then leave her for a couple more days just to be on the safe side, then let her go. Did she lose many eggs?

Hope it all goes ok this time after all the time your've taken to get them both just right :good: It's so nice to see someone put their fishies first :good:

All right, i think im gona let them go tomorrow. I put the female in a few hours ago and all i did was switch ends so now she is floating at the other end of the tank, plants in middle and this time i put the styrofoam cup thing in for the nest and to my surprise the male has started a small nest!!! Lets see what tomorrow will bring, hopefully an easy going spawn :good: Everything is ready get an update either tomorrow or day after

Awwwww bless him....sounds good :good: Look foward to hearing how things go and hopefully wrigglers by the weekend :hyper:

:shout: As we speak they are spawning!!! i just witnessed some of it, the males nest isn't huge but he seems to be getting a ton of eggs into it, i was going to turn on the light so i could see better but i don't think i should because it might confuse them or something lol. Should have babies tomorrow!!! microworms are here everything seems to be going great now!!!

Congrats on your spawn :hyper: :hyper: Isn't it amazing watching them. I would put the light on as once they've finished the male will need the light 24hrs a day to be able to look after the babies :good:

Ok well there still at it, lol, its not the largest spawn but its something, yeah i could say my secound successful spawn, just the first time i didn't see the spawning occur, i got babies but they died i think it was because i made the infusoria rong, idk, this time im skipping to microworms and there is a live plant in there that should have some microlife in it for the babies, and the 2 sponge filters that have been going for...idk how long i think actually jan. so they should have food, this was the first time i witnessed ive witnessed it and it is awesome, never seen fish do that before, lol, usually its the livebearers they just swim around and a month later there are babies everywhere lol. now, once there done i should see the female... I guess she would be swiming around the tank? then i take her out and treat her as if she is being condtioned again, then once the babies are free swimming possibly tomorrow, i would take the male out and do the same, right, when should i start feeding the babies would it be about 1-2days after there free swimming because of the egg sack? right? cant wait hopefully this time i will get babies to grow up! Thanks for helping everyone, hopefully i can get pics!! is there a way to post vids? that would be better.

Well lets hope you get some babies to make it this time. Once the female has swum off and is showing no more interest then take her out and give her a nice feed of bloodworm if you have any. The eggs should hatch between 24 and 36 hrs and you'll see little tails hanging down from the nest and a few will be bobbing up and down. It'll be another couple of days after that before they are free swimming and then you can take Dad out and give them their first feed :good:

I tried a different food this time rather than microworm and I've got about 100 babies still at just over a week old now. I used some infusoria for the first feed and a tiny bit of egg yolk and then started with vinegar eel and I seem to have more success this time with keeping more of them alive. Now I've said it I've probably put the kiss of death on them

Can't wait to hear you've got wrigglers hopefully starting tomorrow night :good:

:shout: the female is out and now i have babies!!! As i said not the biggest spawn theres probably 40-maybe100 i cant tell there too small, i am now supporting the styrofoam cup because there is no bubble nest the male is watchn the babies and the babies are all over the submerged part of the cup, i would also recommend putting duckweed in the tank because the babies are in the duckweed too. the babies aren't free swimming yet they still stay on the cup or duckweed sometimes if they are disturbed they will swim crazy, but remain at the top, the male i was very pleased he cleaned off the floor where the babies could fall, and he checks the floor everynow and then and when there where eggs, he did pick as many as he could even off the floor, there wasn't that many, because the female had lost some, during the swimbladder problem but thats ok i still got babies! I think i got a very good male considering he is watchn them and never leaves the nest, he has been watchn them for about 2-3 days straight.(day/night the light is kept on), so once the babies start swimming around and the male leaves the nest i take the male out and feed the babies then or should i wait a day? thanks! :good:

That's fantastic news......congrats on your babies :hyper: :hyper: Sounds like he's being a great Dad so once they are swimming quite happily on their own you can take him out and give him a lovely treat of bloodworm or something. I would then feed the babies straight away........now is the hard part in keeping them alive and healthy

lol, yeah thats a whole new part... Well I think they have plenty of food in the tank as to the sponge filters and the huge piece of hornwort in the middle and duckweed floating all over, but I also plan to feed them there microworms, i just looked at the cultures and they are overflowed with worms, i did make new cultures about a week ago so just need to use them. i bought a brine shrimp net to rinse them before i feed them to the babies too, so when there about 3 weeks of age then i can top the tank off with water and start doing water changes? i think thats what it said in the book just i plan on doing water changes in my 20 long, and use it as my growout tank, its only half full right now. I thought i read somewhere maybe we talked about it in this subject, lol, but can i spit the babies up into totes and use them as growouts? or put them in one large tote, its cheaper than buying say 2 more 20 gallon tanks or a 55 gallon tank, just have to put a filter and heater in each. i have extra heaters, and all i probably need is to get a few more sponge filters, i think if this goes well i will make bettas one of my permanent hobbies, im 14 so i dont have permanent ones yet, but so far its been a lot better than having livebearers. :D

i would leave the babies in the spawn tank and disturbe them asd little as possible for the first 3 weeks, they need humid air to breath and moving them arounf might be too much for the as theyb are very delicate right now. after that maby 4 weeks then i would move them only if they seem to be too many for the tank size you have,, they might not all make it but dont get upset,, you somtimes can lose alot in the process, i have 20 ish in a twenty gal and will probally be jaring them out to their own space at 8 weeks. some people wait till 12 all depends on the number of fry and the aggresion levels, anover crowded tanks will have more fighting them a understocked tank.i have heard of people using plastice totes for grown out tanks that great anad they afe cheep too, just try them out for a day or two to make sure that the tote wont melt,, cause of the heater. some have cheeper plastic then others, and make sure they have lids weather tank, tote or jar they are in , with air holes,, cause theycan jump. good luck

Thanks, sorry if i forgot to mension yeah i wasn't going to plan moving them until there growout time(3-4weeks) from what ive read in a book i have. right now i covered the area that is open in the back (where the heater, filter go) with cling wrap stuff, and the aquarium seems to be really humid inside when i open it a put my hand in i can feel the warmth and the sides of the tank, are covered with water dorplets, do to humidity, if i only get say 20-30 fish because this was a very small spawn would the 20 gallon long be big enough for the growout? And when should i top it off with water and start water changes? would that be at the 3-4week period? thanks for your help

Congrats! The best of luck with the fry! :hyper:
I think a 20 gal long would be ok, but you need somewhere to put all the males separately. What are you planning to do with the males?
