And i just had another question, ok, they have been in the tank together for about a day, with the female in the livebearer trap, i think ill have to wait another day because the male has not built his nest, so today i put in the half styrofoam cup. I just wanted to know should i take her out untill he builds the nest? and should i feed them still with the bloodworms until he builds the nest? thanks for your help cant wait

No need to take her out and don't worry it he doesn't build a great nest....my last 2 didn't. I keep feeding both right up until I let the female out. Is she showing any vertical breeding bars?

my last couple of times, i tried a trick which has worked well for lots of people on here. i have her in the floating trap for a few day's feeding well. then i let here out for approx 30 mins, then i put her back in the trap. next day i let her out for another 30 mins, and then back in the trap. then next day i let her out again. she usually swims straight under the nest immediately, and it tends to all happen quite quickly thereafter.

Thanks, yes she does show her bars when the male is near but then they fade back to reg color, its a 20 gallon long so sometimes the male isnt always in sight do to the hornwort on the other half of the tank. So they will breed even without a bubble nest? Will the babies survive? I think im going to wait at least one more day before i let her out.

We've had 2 spawns this week with little or no nest. The first one I syphoned up the eggs and put them in a tub floating in the tank with about an inch of water. They hatched fine in the tub and today I put them back in the main tank. The 2nd spawn she started releasing eggs while she was still in the chimney so I let her out quick and he also didn't have much of a nest, so I've done the same with those eggs and they should hopefully start hatching tonight. Sometimes the male will quickly make a nest once the female has been released so don't worry too much about that

Thanks, i think ill feed them and possibly let her out later tonight if that sounds good, or do you think i should wait another day? I probably wont be there to syphone any eggs though, if she does lay them overnight.

I'd wait until first thing in the morning so you're there to keep an eye out on them. It can sometimes take a while.......ours have taken about 24hrs before spawning. Also don't panic when he starts chasing her.....it does look brutal sometimes but is part of their mating ritual. Unless of course she is really getting battered and torn.

When everything goes perfect you know something is going to have to go wrong... When i woke up this morning, the female betta seemed to be floating on her side... she isn't dead, thats the good thing, just i need help to get her better. Is she just that full of eggs if i put her in with the male will that help, or is she bloated or something, she seemed fine yesturday. Right now she is floating on her side in the livebearer trap in the tank. she can swim down a little bit but then she usually goes back up on her side. Please help, i knew something had to go wrong everything seemed to be to perfect.

Sounds like she may have swimbladder. I would take the male out for a while so she doesn't get too stressed and keep her in the net where she is and stop feeding for 24hrs and see how she is then.

What a shame it's happened now. Although we had a female recently in the spawning tank that we had to remove because she became ill. She's fine now though!!!

She did drop some eggs in the trap too, probably 15-30 of them

All right she has recovered and is now swimming around, , should i feed her today and let her go tomorrow? she did get a little smaller than she was yesterday. thanks.
