Betta Breeding Business

this is exactly what I am thinking of doing, there is such a market for decent local bettas its crazy. I know it might be hard, and I also know it wont be a huge money maker...I am a stay at home mom and I thought it would be something to bump up our income a tiny bit(if all goes well) while I am at home with the kids...so I am doing something that I enjoy anyways:)

something I have noticed localy, that many lfs are only interested in buying for as cheap as cheap is possible...and very often are so sick they look near death. if you can provide a better betta localy...and get the word out that you are doing so, you could make yourself a tidy buisness.

The only chance you stand against the Asian imports is providing a superior product. Good shops will pay more for better quality. If you provide a fish that is the same as they get imported for a cheaper price they have no reason to buy your fish. This does involve culling, and this is a hard thing for many breeders to get past. It's a fact of life for any successful breeding operation, and something you have to consider if you are planning on starting a successful business.

External defects will often manifest as internal defects as well, which are impossible to detect without dissection. I breed angels, and long ago tried keeping culls & runts long term, to see how they would grow out & survive. 90% die within the first year, only the ones with a slight defect survived beyond that time. This is for a fish known to have a lifespan of 10+ years if properly cared for, and these fish were given more attention than usual. This may be something you would like to try with fish that should be culled, before you give them away with your name attached. Giving away a defective product is not a good way to make a name for yourself in any business.

well as far as culling is concerned for me, there is a difference between deformed and unable to lead a happy life and just not spectacular fish. Ill give ugly fish away for nothing. but I think BIG difference is made in starting out with quality stock to begin with.

What about trying for a PKCT by putting your plakat male with your ct female. I know it's something that a few people are working on getting. It would take a few generations to achieve it, but might make a good project.

ba i HAVE a placket crown tail male... not that i bought him for it i thought he was a ct female,, real pretty cambodian with whitish body and bluish purple fins. till newfishey came over to look at ''her'' and is like ,, um azul its flaring and has a real beard,, its a boy,, its real young only 2 .5 months at the most, but i havent got a lfs that wants to buy it or anything cause they say they dont go in to special types.... but they would take it for ''free'' and try to give it a home or sell it as a cheeper betta,, i think that one guy was trying to rip me off
