I have a male betta in a 28l and worried he's getting lonely since I moved him out of the community tank. I was think of getting him a couple of dwarf frog friends. The tank has sand substrate and live plants. Would I be able to add two to this size tank? Do they have any special requirements that I would need to provide for?

hey! ADF are a fantastic addition to a betta tank!

they have their own feeding requirement - frozen bloodworms every two-three days is fine. best to feed them at night right before you turn off the light - they hunt by scent, not sight.
make sure the tank is not over 18 inches high - it would be to hard of a struggle to breathe.

get atleast two frogs - they do great in pairs or more - when you are about to add them, take the betta out for a few minutes, rearrange a couple plants, add the frogs, then add the betta - seeing the plants rearranged and the frogs in there before he is in there will make the betta feel as if the frogs BELONG to his territory and he won't be aggressive towards them.

hope this helps! I have had ADFs for a long time - if you have any more questions feel free to PM me :)

oh and make sure you get african DWARF frogs and not african CLAWED frogs - they are often mislabeled in LFS but ACF grow to about 4-6"!!! best way to tell - the feet - make sure you get a frog that has webbing between the toes of all four feet - if it only has webbing on the hind feet then it is a clawed frog that will get way to big for your tank and will ultimately eat the betta

I would actually be pretty wary adding Frogs to a Betta tank. I've heard some horror stories of Bettas breaking the legs and nipping off toes and eyes of the frogs, and the frogs mistaking a long Betta tail as a passing bloodworm, clamping on, and not letting go, leaving irreparable damage to the fish.

ADFs are best in species tanks.

Don't say you haven't been warned!

it really depends on the fish and his personality, why was the betta removed from the community tank to begin with?

He was in a 63l with 5 neon tetras and I realised it would be difficult or impossible to add anything else with him in there. They all got on OK though, he's not aggressive at all.

also, just make sure the frog is actually getting some food. the betta will be much better at finding the worms and the poor frog may starve. its a little extra commitment at feeding time to kep the betta away until the frog gets some food. a good way is to use a pipette and "dose" the worms right in front of the frog's face, instead of just adding them to the tank where the betta will happily pick off all the worms before the frog gets his meal.
just another thought. i have 0 problems with my frogs and betta combo...other than the feeding which you can resolve.
cheers

Gonna buy a turkey baster tomorrow as I know the betta will gobble up all the bloodworms, he's such a pig. How many worms should I allow for each frog?

In my betta tank i've 1 male and 2ADF and a few kuillies. For feeding i've just being giving them flakes for the betta and sinking pellets for the kuillies, ocasionally i give them dried bloodworm and they swim up to get it. been all fine for a good few months even though I've only seen them eat about twice so they must be eating somthing
