I think I know the answer, but I need some experienced advice. I just moved my Betta from a 1 gal jar (shame on me, I know, I was a newbie not too long ago!) into a 5 gallon tank. Put a heater in it, on low to slowly acclimate him. HOwever the heat wouldn't rise since there was not top on the tank. I made a makeshift tank top of stiff cardboard, covered in foil, which very nicely warmed up the tank for him, but then I realized that the foil, which is a little moist, may be dangerous. Any input is appreciated. What can I use to keep tank covered if this isn't a good idea?

maybe put a towel over the top in such a way that it can't fall in....just a thought...i'm not sure about the foil.....

Oooh good you should ask; I have a very cheap, safe was to make a "hood."

Buy one of those plastic sheets used for needlepoint, and cut it to fit your tank with some overhang. You can use clips to hold it down, or even tape if you don't mind getting it on the glass. You can cut a "door" in it for vaccuming the tank, and trim a hole to fit any cords that need to come out as well. Then, to keep the heat in, simply lay a towel or peice of cardboard over top. It works great to the best of my experience. ^^ Good luck.

thanks, right now I put a towel around the temporary hood. will get that tomorrow!

Get Glad press'n seal and they work real good. :) I used some of my breeder tank 10 gallon too and it work so good. :p

the water should still be warm without a hood but its the evaporation that made you hood wet, get a plastic condensation tray and cut that to size for your tank that works and allows light in as well......
