Best Way To Photograph Your Fish

I have access to one, which is good. I'm really good friends with Mark Evans, who happens to be one of the best, if not the best aquatic photographer, next to Takashi Amano. Which is always helpful lol!

I have also had a look at the sigma 70-200, it's OK, but there are better lenses. A lot more expensive grated. I have been offered an 10-22mm UWA quite cheap, now that takes some awesome pics!

I use the camera flash ATM but have a flash gun coming in the post, the tank is way over lit ATM as im waiting to upgrade and have a 40W 4ft tube above a 2ft tank.

Also have you got any tips for taking photos of Dark/black fish? my Neons come out nice and clear with the flash but the Darker fish are nearly indistinguishable =C

The photo in my sig is with the flash on.

Amount of lighting is variable depending on the individual. My 15 gallon 2 foot tank has about 40 watts on it and that is over just the 2 feet. My 20 gallon High has a 55 watt PC bulb, then my 4 ft tank has two 55 watt PC bulbs with a pretty high end efficiency kit on it. The latter two run pressurized CO2. Since its pretty high light it makes photography easier.

If you really want to use the flash you can try diffusing it by placing a napkin or piece of paper over it that way it isn't so overly bright.

To use a remote flash the camera will have what is called a hot shoe (a way to fire the remote flasj when you push the button). I kust picked up a new camera for tank and fish pics and did not want to get into the expense etc of a DSLR, so I went with the CannonPowershot G12. The features I wanted to be sure any camera i got would have are

1. Maco mode.
2. Hot Shoe for flash
3. Ability to work it manually and not just in an auto mode.
4. A good auto mode so I don't have to work manually if I dont want to.

I am attending a photo workshop on how to shoot fish and tanks this Saturday at the Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies 37th Annual Convention. http://convention.northeastcouncil.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=151&Itemid=157

For any other Americans in the northeast part of the country, its a good event, really good speakers and a good auction Sunday.
