my tank used to alwatys be cystal clear until i added some bogwood about 2months ago. now it is never quite as clear as it used to be i do about a 30% water change a week, any tip on having clear water?

many thanks
james

If you don't want the bogwood to leach tannins then you can boil it for a while or leave it to soak for a week or 2. Also using carbon and polishing wool in your filter will help your water return to normal.

chemical filter media ie activated carbon or purigen will take the tannins from the bogwood out of the water and make it clear again

thankyou for your replys.
i all ready have carbon and woolinmy filter (fluval 305) . this is how i have my trays filled hope it make sense the wool being in the top tray and carbon/boiball stuff in bottom two. do you think this is suitable. soory if this is a silly question pretty new to this.

(wool / wool )
(carbon/bioballs)
(bioball/ carbon)

if this is wrong any suggestions on how it should be?

many thanks
james

Don't need black carbon for crystal clear water.
Good filter, filter floss or matting, and weekly maintance.

I have this problem on occasion and just do a good water change every day until it clears.

Again the only way to obtain crystal clear water is to periodically use a Diatomic Filter.

I agree with Thomas. Just do more water changes. Perhaps every day or every couple of days until the tannins stop leaching.

You will have to replace the carbon every week or so because it will fill up pretty quickly with the tannins.

Im sorry but i respectfully disagree, You can have CRYSTAL clear water with a basic fluval if the correct mumbers of "good" bacteria are present in a well cycled and happy aquarium.

Bacteria has no effect on tannins or making the water crystal clear. Mechanical or chemical filtration is needed for removing tannins or other particulate matter.
A BigC said a diatomic filter will do the job 100%. Purigen will also make it crystal clear although not to the degree that a DF will. A UV filter should also help. Carbon may help a little but isn't worth the effort imo.

I have never had any of these things and have always had completely crystal clear water. to quote myself correctly i said "you CAN have crystal clear water with a basic fluval".

Im sure you can have crystal clear water with other methods but im saying you dont have to go to those extremes.

and Bacteria DO have an effect on clearing water. not on tannins though, you were right there.

Just becuase you haven't doesn't make it fact. Many people have had the same problem and a filter will do very little towards resolving a tannin issue.

please explain further.

OMG Im not saying its FACT please look at the word in capital letters C A N.

To your second point here:

AquaClearer™ Extreme Dry contains bacteria and enzymes that are scientifically blended and tested to produce maximum results in ornamental ponds. These specific beneficial microbes and enzymes are effective at reducing sludge, uneaten fish food, fish waste, and excess nutrients that cause poor water quality and clarity.

Keeps your water clear, your fish health, and your pond beautiful

Safe for fish and plants

Available in 4.6 oz. or 1.2 lb. or 5 lb. tub

totally agree with the statement, my Fluval 405 keeps my 150 litre tank absolutely crystal clear, however my FX5 fails to keep up with the 450 litre.

wow! politness isn't a strong point of yours but it seems ignorance is. Any filter in that respect can keep water clear, including crappy fluvals, however it won't remove tannin from the water to the point that it is crystal clear.

Ahh now I understand, in fact you have no proof at all and are just putting forward some advertising blurb you read of the back of a packet and are assuming it applies to everything. As I said earlier, bacteria will not remove tannins. Don't bother replying unless you have scientific proof stating otherwise.
