My crowntail is doing nicely! His color has gotten brighter, he's eating, and he had made a pretty decent bubble nest. Yesterday I changed his water, but I want to know what the best way to do it since he's in a bowl and not a tank. I measured the temp of the water and then moved him to a smaller bowl with filtered tap water of the same temp. Then I rinsed out his bowl and rocks thoroughly, and refilled the bowl with filtered tap water at the same temp. I added the appropriate amount of Betta water conditioner, and then put him back in. He was only out of his primary bowl for a few minutes. He got a little stressed, but was back to normal within 5-10 minutes.

Today he's eaten really well and seems a lot happier. He's doing this odd thing that I wanted to ask about. When I come up to the bowl with his food, he comes up to the side and starts opening and closing his mouth really wide. Is that odd? Not flaring, just opening and closing his mouth. Also, sometimes he'll spit out a piece of food after chewing on it. I think some of the granules are harder for him to eat than others. Just thought I'd share that. These guys seem a lot more interesting than people typically give a fish credit for.

no...its not odd...he is soooo used to you feeding on the right time everyday that knows that you are going to feed him....my bettas do that too....they know that im going to feed them...the reason why he is spitting out his food is because he wants something else to eat...try giving him live stuff like brineshrimp and black worms or tu-flex worms.

It sounds like you're cleaning the tank just fine. Here's how I clean mine. I got all but 1 fish at Petco (kept the small cups they came in) and the one I didn't get there, I asked a friend to pick up an empty cup for me....

I put that cup directly in the fish's old water, scoop him and the water out. Dump the old water, rinse with hot water the bowl, and decorations. Refill with the same temp tap water, add the water conditioner and stress coat, let betta float in cup to make sure the temp is exactly the same. Wait about 10 min or so, and let fishie swim out of cup. Then I rinse the cup with nice hot water ;) They don't seem to mind tooo too much

Hope this helps
