Do I need substrate in my platy breeding tank?
 
What would be the best type of substrate?

I'm not an expert, but it seems like sand is a good choice. ^^

I wouldn't use any makes things so much easier when the fry are born

Depends how you want to breed them.
My platy fry hid really well between the river gravel grains, so sometimes that helps them survive the predation of the adults once born and gives you time to scoop them out if you want to save all.
