So I'm in the process of setting up a 4ft 55 gallon tank in my dining room. I haven't bought any of the filtration or heating for the tank yet but what do you think the best option is? How difficult/cost effective are sump systems? I can't drill the tank as it is tempered glass. Would a canister style filter be better? What brands would you recommend? So far the largest tank I've had is a 20 tall and for that I use an Aquaclear 50 HOB, so more advanced filtration systems are unknown territory to me.

Canister, ive never had a problem with mine ( needs to be cleaned to keep good flow rate on the output up, id say maybe once a monthish)
eheim e3 I think mine is. Its rated for 125 gallons so it can be put on bigger setups later on if you want.

I woukd also recommend a power head on the opposite side but you dont have to do it, for me it helps cancel out the flow and create low flow areas for my slow/lazy fish.

In my opinion sumps are great for 20+ gallon marine tanks and freshwater tanks up in the 100s+ unless you really need another tank to put stuff in

and you shoukdnt have to cycle either if you're putting in the HOB on the 55, you can just take out the media In there and put it in one of the compartments in the canister
