I have been running a Fluval FX5 as the sole filter in my 640 litre tank but have now added my old Fluval 305. The second filter is there to contain fine filter wool to remove particles and make the water clear and I have removed all fine filter material from the FX5 so that it does not need to be touched for months, perhaps even a year as it is unlikely to get blocked.

I am wondering how to place the inlets and outlets for the two filters though. Both inlets at one end and outlets at the other or perhaps having half the tank each or a combination wherein the water coming in to the tank meets in the middle to form a bit of a maelstrom to disturb the surface water.

Can't decide. Any suggestions? What have others done?

I have a 6ft 125g tank with 2x Emperor 400 HOB filters, a Maxi-Jet 400 Powerhead, and a Mag Drive 500 (the latter is part of an overflow-refugium-sump system).

I did the same by stuffing wool into one of the filters.

I set my tank up like a river.  The water flows from one side to the other with exception of the surface.

Both Emperors are on opposite ends of the tank facing each other, so there is a bit of a dead zone/maelstrom at and just below the surface on the right-center portion of the tank.  On the left is the powerhead, sump return and the stock Emperor.  On the right is the sump intake and wool-modified Emperor.

My theory (which seems to be effective), is that detritus and free-floating particles are drawn by the current to the right side of the tank, where they are then sucked up and removed by the wool-modified filter and sump.  The filter draws water from the middle/top, while the sump intake is closer to the bottom.

Yes, sounds like the best idea, plus my clown loaches will appreciate the flow. Cheers.
