out of sheer curiousity... upon my recent visit to an aquarium... i was told that hikari betta bio gold food was the best kind of food out there for bettas... is it true or are they just telling me that so i buy more expensive food??

what are your thoughts/opinions??

All of the bettas I've ever had have taken Hikari with absolutely no problem. It's not very expensive either. They sell it in that really small pack for bettas for a couple bucks and it lasts for forever.
I'm not sure if it's THE best, but it seems like bettas love it (at least mine heh).

I don't think there's really any one food that is the best since most everyone recommends you vary their diet.
So yeah... the best food for a betta isn't just one thing.. but a diet that's varied :D

I have tried Hikari and it was ok but all my Betta's spat it out for a while before eating it. They all love Atisons pro though which isn't as hard.

i picked up the hikari bio-gold once by sheer chance and i like it. its a pellete, makes it easier regualting food amounts easier. also seems to brighten thier colurs up more. i just got my new guy two days ago and already his colours are starting to brighten. but from what iv read varience in diet is key.

mozzie larvae, bloodworms, brineshrimp, marine mix, flies and any small insects you can catch without bug spray. Although prepack dry foods are good, fish will always benefit from live or frozen foods offered on a regular basis.

My guys all get a mix of hikari betta bio-gold, frozen blood worms, frozen brine shrimp, live vingegar eels and live grindal worms

heh that's cool... thanks everyone

i have another question... i was thinking of getting a plant for my betta's and i was wondering what kind of plant you guys would recommend. i know some one who has a plant and a relatively large snail in their betta tank and their betta loves it... so i was thinking of doing the same to have some form of ecological balance.

i know the plant takes outs out nitrates and carbon and the snails do a good job of cleaning... i was wondering what your thoughts were??

A low light plant would probably be best. Uhm.. I dunno what the names of any are though lol. I'm sure you could ask in the plant section and then look up the names they give you to see if you'd like something like whatever they suggest.

Sword plants are also good. They're pretty tough plants and grow fairly well and fast.
Anubias plants are pretty good too. You're supposed to tie them to a piece of wood instead of burying their roots. It grows pretty slow though.

All of my bettas seem to love cambomba. It's a bit messy (when the leaves come off) and I think needs pretty good lighting though.

Here are some pics of the plants in my 2 betta tanks... I have no idea what the names of most of them are :p heh

This one is of a sword plant in my 3 gallon. There's also 2 stalks of cambomba floating on the surface. You can't see it, but there's also a tiny anubias tied to a decoration.

Now I'm pretty sure these are plants that don't need great lighting.... at least that's what the fish store guy said lol. They're really nice though and really pretty. Hard as heck to get their dern roots buried though! :p

The one behind the frilly one up front. This plant has reddish coloring to it's leaves. Really nice contrast to all the green.

And another. The leaves are green, but the stems have a really nice looking red color to them.

And a pic of the anubias. It's the one with the big leaves in the background. It's still in the pot it came in.. mainly b/c I'm lazy and didn't feel like tieing it down to anything :p

And a pic of the cambomba. I really like this plant. It's pretty, grows fast and my bettas love it. They always like squeezing their way through the frilly leaves. We used to have purple cambomba (it had a pretty purple hue to some of the leaves) but it all ended up dying for some reason *shrugs*

hey thanks a lot for the advice! :)

just curious if you know the general price range for most of these plants?

oh yea one more thing.... does any one ever use snails in their bowls/tanks??? i hear they are quite good but i'm not sure since i've never really had much luck with snails in the past... lemme know what you guys think!

I have found that Elodea grows amazingly. Even in dim light it will grow, and you can even grow it floating! I got mabe 6 stals, probably more for 5.99 CDN.

Snailwise, I find them stinky.
