I recently purchased the Belkin N+ wireless router and because i know very little about routers and networking i didn't realize that it requires a separate modem to run it. What would be the best modem to run along side the router?

most routers work from the modem

modem----------router----------computers

or somthing like that

my dad made the exact same mistake as you with the exact same model! we took it back and got a router/modem belkin works great so if you can take it back get a modem/router one from belkin it works great and still has wireless :) :D

you need a N Wireless USB Adapter (F5D8053), Notebook Card (F5D8013) or ExpressCard Adapter(F5D8073)
all of which are sold seperatley

after researching a little do you think it would be an adequate modem and easy to link with the current belkin router?

need some details before a recommendation can be made:
1, what network/provider
2, what modem did they give you?

modem routers are only for telephone line connections. ie BT, O2, Talk talk. no use at all for cable connection.

we are with virgin media.
we didn't recieve a modem from them.

?????????????????????????? Virgin always provide a modem. you cant get one, that works, from anyone else. so contact virgin. its your only hope. as for a router (no such thing as a cable modem-router). any "router only" will do. if you go for "N". make sure you home pc or laptop, actually has "N" capability. or you need a £40 dongle, to take advantage.
for an "N" router i'd suggest the, D-LINK DIR-655 xtream N
for G any Netgear or Dynamode "cheepo" will be fine.

thats BS
I am with virgin and I use my belkin router modem.
all you need is your user name and password from virgin

I am using router with Virgin's cable modem, the vast majority with Virgin have a cable modem that provides a standard network (RJ45) connection for internet access, so the router normally needs to be one with a WAN RJ45 port (as was bought) rather than a telephone cable for outside connections (router with built in modem)...that being said there are obviously some who have other arrangements just so there isn't one right way to do things :)

I guess the best place to start is what was your old setup that worked like?
