I have just found a beetle walking around in my Planted FW tank! I'm not too sure what he is. Looks a little like a cricket, six legs, small mouth parts about 1 cm long with a brown striped back.

Can someone please ID him for me and tell me if he is safe or not?

Pictures below, I think he has moulted ad I see some shell there that looks like his (unless there is another one which is dead!). I have taken him out for the moment but if he is a safe critter I will put him back in.

Sorry but going to repost this in another section as well... (not sure where yet though).

I think he came in on some crypts I bought from the LFS last weekend.

No idea what it is, but one thing is for sure. It's uuuggglllyyy.

I quite like him. If I knew he was fish/shrimp safe I would have left him in there but at the moment I'm just worried he is the laval form of something that will start snacking on my cherry shrimp or fish :)

Just hoping that if he is harmful he doesnt have a load of friends in the tank!

A larvae of some sort of flying thing I suspect. He will possibly eat your shrimp and could feed of fry, it's what they do in ponds :shout:

Appears to be a Clubtail Dragonfly Larva, although i'm by no means 100%.
Try google imaging this?

Always remove anything unrecognisable from your tank.....

Yeah I looked through loads of pictures of various larva. Couldnt find anything that looks the same. Closest looking was dragonfly larva but even that didnt look exactly the same.

Might put a couple of traps in the tank tomorrow night just to make sure there are no others in there :) Think I might set this guy up a little home in a jar somewhere and see what he turns into :)
