I am considering getting  a few different types of barbs within the species.   Will they school together or do I have to get one types--such as all tiger barbs?   I have a 35 gallon hex tank.

Do you mean like mixing tiger barbs and cherry barbs? If so I don't think that'd work, but there are a few color variants within the tiger barbs and I think they all stick together, though could be wrong.

+1

in that size of a tank for the most part similar looking barbs will go together but if they don't look anything alike then they won't. i have had all colors of tigers mix together in tanks, but in my pond not even guppies of different colors stick together. orange stick with the orange, red stick with red, white stick with white... etc.

Not many barbs suit squat tanks, they tend to be active fish... what the the dimensions of this 35g hex?

10+ of a single species in a suitable tank eg. 12 Gold Barbs in a 65g will look better and act more natural, than 6 Gold Barbs and 6 Black Ruby Barbs.

I am not sure if they will "look better", as that is really just in the eye of the beholder, but they certainly will recognize their own color variation
