i was gonna buy some tetras today but the lady told me not to cuz my barbs ( 4)would bother them to death , is that true?

what kind of barbs do you have??

most barbs probably won't bother them. the only barbs i can see being a pain are tiger barbs. but in my experience they usually only bother each other and similar or even larger size fish.

I have 2 green tiger barbs , 1 blk ruby and a tiger barb, I was gonna buy 4 baby neon tetras, she said they were small and my barbs r too big for them and could bother them , so I ended up buying a krib...but I want to add some color to my community , all my fish are not quite colorful

Tetras are too small for my tastes. They are pretty but their size is a disadvantage, if ya buy them they can be ate by just about everything. I have a soft spot for oddball fish, most oddball fish will have a tetra as a snack.

simply put, Tiger Barbs should be a single species tank, they will fin nip anything and everyting. They will badger, harass everything else.

well my barbs seem to be very well tamed, cuz they dont bother my cories , krib at all

I would disagree with the statement that tiger barbs should be in a species tank, but they should be considered somewhat dangerous to some types of fish who have large fins or are slow moving. I keep tiger barbs with cichlids and they all 'tame' each other.

I would be hessitant to keep small tetras or high-fin (skirted) tetras with tiger barbs. They do get bigger than some people realize at a good 3 inches long and very round.

tiger barbs are renowed for fin nipping other fish especially long finned ones. however if you keep them in groups of at least 6 or more they tend to only bother each other. this is what i have found from the majority of research i have done on them.

I kept a group of 8 tiger barbs in a tank with 10 cardinal tetras and they got on fine. The tetras where fully grown though and I tend to go by the general rule that if one fish will fit in another fishes mouth then it will end up as dinner.

I ended up giving the barbs to my sister and she had a pair of angelfish in there. Again they seemed to be more interested in picking on each other then on anyone else.

I couldnt say if this was what they are like in general though as its only one group.

I had 6 tiger barbs and had to get rid of them or get rid of the rest of my tank. They went after every fish I had except RTS. They are really nice looking fish but I don't think they would get along with anyone..I gave mine to the LFS

I have 6 large tiger barbs and 5 small cardinal tetras and so far (8 weeks together) have only had one problem, woke up one morning to find the smallest cardinal with no tailfin, sadly it didn`t make. not sure who the culprit was but my finger pointed to the largest tiger (about 2") with a grin on its face, if thats possible, it certainly looked guilty!!!!!!
