I am trying to get my pet store to ban Betta Cups. So I have a paper that everyone I see I am going to try to get to sign it and once I get 30 people than I am showing it to my pet store and try to get them to get bigger bowls or tanks for there Betta fish.

They are going to laugh at you...trust me. They aren't interested in Bettas...they are interested in money. I don't mean to ruin your parade or anything but it won't work.

Is there any way to set up a petition online? I'm sure you'd have hundreds of signatures in a few days...

thats stupid on the lfs part. why would they pay more money on fish they are trying to sell.

edit: wow 3 flames in one minute.

Especially when so many of even the people who completely disagree with betta cups still buy bettas in them as "rescues" -_- .

i have never seen a dead betta at a lfs . ever . so they work.

Not all of them. Many of the chain stores have dead fish. Perhaps you should take other shops into consideration before making that assumption.
IMO, there's no point in trying.

I have seen many dead fish at this pet store. At least 20 dead bettas since they opened and thats only counting the ones I have SEEN... So I really do not know how many dead ones. There is a point for me. Its like a goal:)

Unfortunately due to space limitations most pet shops simply won't be interested in upgrading the size of their betta housing. I have however seen long strip barrack setups that although they have very little swim room, do have a constant water flow / filtration via drip system. This is the way my local PetSmart houses bettas, and thus it is the only place I will buy bettas from locally.

I have seen quite a few dead ones...and I've seen them kept in the same nasty cup water so long that it has turned yellow as well.

-While I agree it is a noble effort, I dont think it will be succesful
-I work at my lfs and can tell you that space really is the issue. You could set up a tank with a tiny of dividers but you would have to use so many dividers for it to be "worth it" that the swimming room would be just as limited. The filtration and heating would be a big plus but TBH our store actually changes the water in the cups everyday, which I am really happy we do.
-I dont think it is a great home from them but we do give them constant water changes and they are usually only in the store for maye half a week max as bettas are a best seller.
-Three fingers-I have to say I completely agree with you. I constantly hear people saying they rescued a betta from the cups when in reality you have further funded them being put into cups.
-K.J.-I work 40 hours a week and I probably toss out one dead betta in that week. Suprisingly, we dont lose many but I contribute that to them not being there very long and daily water changes.
-FBT girl I think what you are trying to do is great and you shouldnt let others discourage you if this is something you really want, no laws would ever get passed if people didnt try :good:

Edit-Forgot to put my name, and I cant have a post without closure ;)

While I also agree it would be pointless...

I'd also like to add that online petitions are meaningless. Not useful for anything, and are not taken seriously by anyone.

Every 'real' petition I've ever had to sign (e.g. government related stuff) you have to provide a name and your living address. It helps to show you are an 'actual' person as opposed to with an online one, you can't prove you didn't just sign it a thousand times yourself. Hence, they are worthless.

Wouldn't it be better to do a big petition and see if you can get your local member of parliament to bring it up. I'm not sure how things work in USA but that's what you would do here. I signed a petition which successfullly got chickens (for laying eggs) in cages banned in one state in Australia. Now they have to be either free range, or in groups in a barn.

I think the Bettas in pet shops which sit in cups is cruel, but hopefully it's temporary. What really bugs me is when they sell cup sized containers for them to live in permanently. A shop near me sells these V shaped containers which contain less than a big glass of water you would drink from. It's absolutely inhumane.

Out of interest, Isn't it illegal in Canada? I thought I read on here that there is a law in Canada which requires fish to have a minimum amount of space??? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
