I just bought this guy this evening and he (maybe she??) already molted. Its color is brilliant now! This one is called Red (it has a friend named Tanner who is, well, tan). I walked by the tank to see if Red or Tanner were filtering yet (not quite), but instead I found this perfectly intact shell. I'm positive it belongs to Red because Tanner hasn't left the left half of the tank yet and this is on the right side a few inches from Red.

I have a question though: Should I remove the Exo? I don't think the bamboo shrimp with eat it, but I've got snails, ghost shrimp, platies, and BN plecos in this tank (though I think I'll trade all the live bearers in for some rasboras at the end of the summer). Will any of them eat the old shell? Also, from the picture of Tanner, can anyone see if Tanner will molt soon too? I'm aware that my shrimp should be handled very delicately right now.

Here are some pictures:

That is Red with his shell

That is the exo

This is Red.

And this is a poor shot of Tanner!

Excellent, always a good sign when shrimps moult :)

As far as am aware, i think you are quite correct in saying Bamboo Shrimps wont eat their own moult, simply because they cannot pick it up.

Am not actually sure if fish will eat at moults? Have never seen any of my fish eat at any RCS moults though, does not meant they don't!

But your snails and Ghost Shrimps may eat it, full of nutrients etc, if still left uneaten for a few hours, take it out. :)

I ended up removing it. The legs started to freak me out. They waved at me. Spooky. I'll post pictures if Tanner decides to molt too.

Made me laugh as i know exactly what you mean :)

It was hypnotic! I couldn't look away from those limp ghost legs. Then the current caught the headpiece and it "looked" at me. It had to go at that point. I was getting goosebumps from staring at it (I may have also been a bit paranoid that it was going to start telling me what to do lol).
