I was thinking of getting one of these guys but was reading that they need fast flowing water with a very high oxygen content to do well.

As my tank is planted there it not a lot of surface movement and minimal current (enough for my tetras but maybe not enough for a filter feeding shrimp). Oxygen content is around 9-11ppm, is this high enough for them (it is fine for the fish). Anyone know the ideal oxygen content for filter feeding shrimp and if they will do ok in a tank without very fast flowing water?

They are filter feeders, so that means finely crushed flakes?

Not nessiserily, if you can crush them up stupidly small then yes, but it is a lot easier to use powdered fry foods. Put some in a small pot, add a little water and use a pipette to target feed them.

Okay. I am buying one, and also, once I find them, glass shrimp.

This is a mistake, Bamboo shrimps are gregatious and NEED groups. Buy four as a minimum, one wont do well on its own. Also, do Glass Shrimp have claws? If so then they will probably harras the other shrimps.

Any inverts for my tank? NO SNAILS!

Why no snails? They are the second best tankmates for Filter Shrimp (the first being more Filter Shrimp) because they create Infusoria which the Shrimp then feed on.

The no snails thing is because they sort of took over. :shout:

Bamboo shrimp do best in sub-tropical tanks with a strong river-like current, the sort of specialised tank set up that fish like hillstream loaches thrive very well in. If you watch the Planet Earth nature documentory series (the Freshwater episode), you will see bamboo shrimp in their natural habitat, which is very cool and fast-flowing indeed.
Ideally, if you want your bamboo shrimp to live for a long time, then you need to give them this sort of habitat- having an established tank is also very important, as these shrimp thrive off eating all the little micro organisms found in more established tanks.

I loved that episode! I got to walk along the top of Victoria Falls, so I think I have an idea of what they need.

My LFS had some of these recently and they are amazing was thinking about some too.

Did you get any in the end and if so how are they getting on?

:shifty: It might be.

I may frequent the place on a daily basis and think that i probably spend to much money there.

Haha, yes. Same here :(. I was there yesterday...and got a bamboo shrimp lol

It's bloody expensive there, though.

The fish arnt too bad, but the reps and rep equipment is well expensive lol

Reps equipment?

Its expensive on some stuff and cheap on others. I tend to get bored and go off for drives and find random fish places Ive seen advertised in PFK and they can be well expensive compared to Porton.

Looked at Filters yesterday and decided to order one from internet and got it 20 quid cheaper but I guess that goes for anything.

Hows your shrimp getting on?

reptile equipment :D

the shrimp is fine :D fanning away lol

i have 3 bamboo shrimp in my 55 gallon community tank, someone asked about keeping them with chilids... well i have mine with an angel, 2 apistos, and 2 bolivian rams. and they seem fine. They have been eating fish flakes as well. Good luck.

Lets see some piccies of the shrimp Esfa, they are so cool.

Might have to invest in some of these when my 55G is up and running.

Are they exspensive there as well? I know that here they are $10.00 which is the most ive paid for any living thing in my tank.
