There are lots of fish that are relatively small yet have a ton of personality!

Cory catfish are one.

If you like the oscars, there are other new world cichlids that are smaller and even more colorful - like apistogrammas or blue rams (or even bolivian rams).

For small fish, there's a whole world beyond tetras and guppies

yeah, but I got this tank hoping to keep some of the bigger species of fish

I might have to give up fishkeeping anyway, Im moving into residence next year and I dont think that dorm rooms are big enough for a 90g

A 90g would be enough for some of the bigger species of fish, just not the *biggest* species. Keeping with NW Cichlids, you could do severums, blue acaras, jack dempseys, just to name a few.

What that would be perfect for would be an African cichlid tank - they are stunning and due to the way that most tanks are planned out (overstocking to distribute aggression), with proper filtration, you could get more bigger fish than you could in a tank of another kind.

If I had an empty 90g, I would definitely do an Africhid cichlid tank - I think they're the most colorful bang for the buck.

Unfortunately, I'm not all that familiar with them since I haven't actually kept them.

In a 90g, you could do ONE oscar, but not 2. If you post in the NW Cichlids forum, someone who's more familiar with the larger cichlids (I have had rams and angels) could help you with a stocking guide.

Mbuna would be very cool and it's a good size tank for them. Very colourful and active tank that would be. You could also have discus in there (depending on other things).

Don't give up hope, your tank is big, it's just not long enough for some fish.
