Hi all,

Wish I was here under better circumstances. So one of my black tiger badis has developed dropsy over the last year or so. At first, I thought he was just fat/constipated since he was the most aggressive eater out of the ones I have, and was always a bit rounder. But over the last month or so, his scales have definitely pineconed and I can see red fluid building up in his abdomen. Just today, he started developing red streaks along his flank. His breathing is a bit labored, but he is still swimming actively and eating normally. A few questions:

1. Could this be caused by an infection or external agent? I suspect it is a tumor as he had a small bump on his side when I got him and the progression has been very slow. It has accelerated over the past month though.

2. Is there any way to treat? If not a cure/medicine, anything to help with the bloating or make him more comfortable?

3. If there is no treatment, is there a way to tell when I should euthanize him? I don't want to euthanize him if possible, and he seems to behave normally.

I've included a couple of photos, a front and a side view. I circled the original bump on his side in the side view (sorry for the picture quality). Thanks for all your help.

At the end of the day he is in a stable tank doing rather well. In a system like yours there is nothing you can really do. Take him out, but why. What will you treat him for as you really don't know what he has. You could put him in another tank with say salt as a tonic, but that all seems a little drastic. He will just pass away in his own time. Enjoy him for what he is.
