From what I have read on this website, it is possible to use bioballs from a mature filter in a new tank to speed up the fishless cycle. However the filter that I am taking the bioballs from has been out of a tank for around 2 years now, will the bacteria be revived once the filter is in use again or do the bacteria die after a prolonged period out of water?

I'm afraid after that period of time with no source of ammonia the bacterias will have died.

Keith.

Bacteria will only survive for a short period of time out of the water and has to be kept wet. You will have to start anew.
