Hi,

I took a gold gourami, 2 black widows and 4 neon tetras to my LFS today to try and get my tanks stocked properly. The guy in the LFS (the one I like and trust) destroyed 2 of the neons as he suspected they had TB. He said the rest of the fish were fine and was happy to take them. He said when they start going banana shaped that's a sign. Now I had a diamond tetra die on me during the week with similar appearance and there's another in the tank who looks like he's going the same way. He said there's not a lot you can do other than remove them from the tank before the others get infected, apparently it's not highly contagious until an infected fish dies and gets eaten, then the eater gets infected.

I probably should euthanise the tetra but I can't cut it's head off, I just can't do it. Is there any other way?

I'm also worried about my Angel now as he ate one of the neons a couple of nights ago, but I don't know if it was infected, I don't think so. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye on them.

ARGHHHH!! What I thought was internal bacteria looks like it's turning out to be something more sinister.

Could you post a pic of the affected fish, just to see if anyone on here has a different diagnosis.....
Search this forum under euthanasia if you think that is the best thing. Theres a fair bit on here.

Got pics, he's not highlighted but I'm sure you'll be able to him out.

What do you think? I never killed a fish, well not deliberately anyway. Lost a few from lack of experience but taking the decision to euthanise is a hard one.

it may be hard to kill a fish, but killing it quickly by cutting it's head off may be better than allowing it to survive like that for so long. it's probably the best way to do it :(

I was told by my local to give them a sharp knock on the back of the head. Other ways such as freezing/clove oil etc.. are said to cause suffering.

As unpleasant as it seems, decapitation is the only surefire way for a quick, painless kill. If you hit their head against something, it may not do the job first time.
