right then its comming along now stand and hood is made. lights, heater and backgrond are in. a rena exp 3 filter( gone way oversize its capable of filtering 600l i only have 210l ) , another 25kg of ocean rock are on order. this is were i need a bit of advice im going for a black sand , what sort of depth should i go for, what about fitting a undergravel jet system and any advice on fitting one of these . one last thing anyone know of a fish safe 40l barrel .thanks in advance

for depth i wouldnt go any deeper than 1.5 inches otherwise you rish a build up of gases.

you can find a pinned thread in the DIY section about underwater jets. think its the DIY one anyway.

and what do ya mean, fish safe?

fish safe as in to store water while it gets to temprature and so i only have to do one trip to the tap for water changes.

ok substrate level is up to you, as for gasses built up, that hardly happens if water changes are done right, as you siphon you vacc ergo no build up so you can have 3+ inches if you like.

Have you heard about Python??
http://www.pythonproducts.com/nospill.htm

I wouldnt be able to have all the tanks I do with out it. takes me 20 minutes to do a w/c on my 110 gallon tank as before with bucket & siphon it took me an hour or more LORD THAT SUCKED!!!!
bucket elbow ya know lolol :hyper:

if your not turned on by the python then Rubbermaid tubs are just fine, I moved houses and all of my fish lived & thrived in them for DAYS

one more quick question is clear styrene sheet safe to use ( its a lot easyier to get hold of)

well thats how ive started doing it as of last week.

i bought an 80 litre bin from B&Q or something like that (my mum got it lol).

trouble is i dont have a spare filter to put in it and cos theres no current you have to keep stirring it or else its cold water at the bottom and hot at the top.

well how come jus about everyone ive ever seen talk about it says no deeper than what i sed?

i looked at using a bin from b&q but im not sure if they would leach anything as the water heats. as for the python it looks like a great idea but would it not put untreated coldwater straight into the tank.
