A few months ago I got 2 goldfish and a week later 2 snails, there's a few live plants in the tank too. Today I went back to pets at home to buy 2 more snails, however after adding them to the tank I found a tiny snail on my algae magnet! Could they be breeding in my tank? I've not noticed any eggs (don't know what they look like) and I think it's unlikely that he arrived on one of the plants as they're kept in separate tanks to the fish and snails and everything. I've only seen the one and he's so small I can't see him at the moment anyway, maybe he's behind the plants. There's also 2 ghost shrimps in the tank, there was nothing else in the bag when they were added either :l Do I need to do anything special for the baby?
Thanks :)

That looks just like a pest/pond snail to me.  (Likely arrived on your first plants in egg form)

By ruby snail do you mean Ruby Nerites?  If so, no they havn't bred.  They lay eggs but they don't hatch in freshwater at all.

That is what Pets at Home sell as "Red Spotted Snail" which are indeed Nerites. These may produce eggs which look like small white bumps over things like bogwood in particular but need brackish/saltwater conditions to hatch in.
What you have there will of 100% come in on the Tropica plants Pets at Home sell (although we have recently had to add signs to the plant tanks saying that the plants have been treated to help remove snail eggs which could in fact damage shrimp - I think it's a company "cover your backside" sign so I wouldn't worry too much). He will munch away on decaying plant matter, waste fish food and all sorts of bits and pieces including algae so I shouldn't worry. Before you know it you will have quite a few of them..

Oh ok thank you :) Should I remove him when I see him again, or just if I end up with more? x

Completely up to you, I left mine in. A year later I'm still not "overloaded" with them, granted I find quite a handful of empty shells in my filtration etc but I should think they also do a decent job clearing up left over food, for free I might have you!

Agreed here.  They don't do anything wrong in essence.

One warning though (aimed at OP here) in case you didn't know already.
  • The "pest" snails are hermaphroditic and even one snail on it's own will reproduce.
  • If you overfeed you could get hundreds.
And a tip.  Go sit by your tank just before the lights come on.  They often tend to hide themselves when tank lights are on.  The moment the lights come on you might immediately spot him (or see that you already have more than one).
I've had an "overrun" tiny quarantine tank in the past. At daytime it looked fine and I rarely saw more than 7-8 snails.  However when the lights just came on I could immediately count 50+.

This is a nice topic to help you identify him if you find him.  I think he's either snail # 2 or 3 on that list.

I've got a snail like this also, but mines is white in colour. Roughly the same size and the shell is the same shape. Only noticed it in the last couple of days.
I've added Java fern and Java moss on a coconut shell cave in the last week. I'm guessing its hitched a ride on there.

Oh dear :s I'll check regularly for them.. I found him again back on the magnet, I agree he's one of them but I can't tell which, he's so small and I've not got my glasses! I had a look in from all angles and could only find the one x

They are really quick as well for snails ha ha. One minute you'll see it, next you turn your head for a second and it's gone!

If you are worried, you could buy an Assassin Snail or two - snail eating snails :D

It was a snail like yours that manged to chomp it's way through my plants!!! Pest that it was, I could never catch it, like sophie said-now you see it, now you don't always moved faster than the speed of light. It came on a plant I bought from pets at home.
Then I added 2 algae eaters. I soon found an empty shell...

Ah well I think he was pretty cute, if I end up with too many I'll do something about them I think :) Thanks guys x
