Baby Pictures of "Mandy"!

This is my baby and precious one in my life! Here's my 4 month old balloon molly, Mandy. I finally got a good picture her after several attempts that always came out with her as a tiny speck of blurr.

Mandy is "daughter" of my beloved balloon molly, Mindy who sadly passed away. I promised myself that I would do anything to care for her last remaining fry and so far she has survived. I'm hoping that Mandy would inherit the colors of her mother: a bright orange with black dots. Enjoy her picture!

I absolutly love balloon mollies! I think it's something about their plump bellies which makes me adore them so much. I have 2 male (one black and the other a peach color with black dots) and I'm hoping to get a few females in their so they'll produce more fry! I always tend to purchase the balloon mollies that are pregnant because I love to raise the fry!

You know, i don't wanna be the negative guy in this post - the molly is indeed very cute BUT isn't mandy alittle small for 4 months??

Mandy is still very tiny for 4 months of age and is a little longer than half an inch. I keep her in a 2.5 gallon tank (with a filter and heater) and feed her between 2-3 times a day, but she still is too small to be released into my main tank. I would release her into my 46 gallon tank, but I have a large black molly that may mistake her as a snack. Do anyone know why Mandy is so small for her age? Does so need more space to grow?

She's still cute to me, but her size is small. . .

Well Sasha,

The most important time of the fry's life that will decide how big it will be is the first month. If you don't feed the fry good food frequently, esp. for the first month, it wouldn't grow very big even if you feed it alot in the 2nd month.
Alot of rookies leave their frys in their main tank thinking that they can grow up there - yes, they will grow up, but how big?? At 6 months of age, the fry could not be bigger than a fry well-fed at 2 months...(size-wise, not color)
You can go to the livebearer section of the forum and check out the topic "How many times do you feed your fry?" There people will tell what they feed their fry and how many times a day for maximum growth.

Its kind of a catch 22...if you put them in a smaller tank they will get more food and will grow quicker, however they will also grow quicker if they are in alarger tank (but may not get as much food)...my platy fry spend their first 1-2 weeks in a breeders net, then they get moved to the 10gal quar/nursery tank then when they look big enough they are put back with the adults. most of the time this is after 6 weeks....i have just moved a "fry" into the main tank with the adults and it is about an inch long at 7 weeks old (and chasing the adults)....

This is so strange! I have a black molly fry that almost 2 weeks old, and she's almost the size of Mandy! I feed all of my fry a variety of foods including crushed flakes and bloodworms as well as First Bites (a special powder for fry) and give it to them 2-3 times daily. I started feeding my biggest fry small peices of adult fish food (frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms with I thaw out before they eat it) and they love it. Maybe Mandy is just the runt of the whole batch and the only one that survived.

Hi Sasha,

I don't think you can do much about mandy's size now, but next time you could maybe try feeding newborns more than just 2-3x a day. Try maybe 4-5x a day and feed more during each feeding should help the frys grow rapidly. Water changes also help spur growth.
