Guys,

I have a snail problem and i got two of these little beauty's today at £2 each which i thought was a bargain. They are up and about and i have seen one of them eat a snail already! he is now sleeping / resting?

I have a few questions if someone could help please?

1) will these snails take care of my pest snail infestation?
2) how many snails will they eat / day?
3) do they supplement their diet with other food sources?

many thanks

Phil

I love to watch mine chase down there prey in slow motion so strange and yet fascinating.

1) They will not reduce a large population rapidly with just 2 however they will keep the population in check and stop it from exploding and being a pest
2) 1-2 then they normally bury themselves and digest it
3) They are scavengers I have seen mine eating a deceased freshwater shrimp after it died by climbing out of the tank and appeared to fall the few feet to the ground breaking its legs poor thing so I cut it in half and shucked it in for the snails and the rest of the shrimp.

hi not sure will help you with ur snail problem but my tank was over run by snails i got two yoyo loaches and within a few weeks they had sorted my problem

why dont you just take your fish out of your tank and CLEAN IT? uhm, this is essential for your fish! This is guna take care of your snail prob for sure. its MONEY-FREE!

by the way, if your thinking about adding chemicals to kill your snails, seriously unessascary just CLEAN YOUR TANK! Take the water out, replace it with tap water, wait 1-2 days and throw your fish back in.

That sounds like awful advice as snails eggs can easily be attachted to your plants, filter, heater, glass virtually everywhere. Also you are going to kill all your filter bacteria if you replace it with tap water due to the chlorine which will lead to you needing to cycle again. Thirdly its very labour intensive when there are natural methods to remove snails. Finally many "pest" snails can survive high toxin levels although it does stunt there growth with the second generation biologists aren't sure if this is a hormone released into the water which affects the juveniles or a genetic insert to stunt them and make the whole generation dwarfs.
