I've had a lone assassin snail in one of my betta's tanks for a number of months now. Never had any others in there, and he leaves it well alone and it has a nice sandy substrate to hide in too.

Tonight though I was doing the water changes for my boys when I noticed that there are lots of little baby assassins in that tank. I thought/read that assassins need one of each sex to breed? Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes; I bought one for my son's tank and he soon had plenty to share around with all my tanks :)

They can carry either the fertilized eggs or, more likely, packets of sperm (I'm not 100% sure which) until they're ready to lay.

They don't breed in anything like the numbers that pest snails do though, so you're not going to be over-run, and there's a ready market for assassins if you do end up with too many.

I'm quite happy to have them, some of my other boys tanks could do with at least one in them. And my soon to be shrimp tank is currently a snail tank due to the moss in it. So that's all well and good.

I was just a bit surprised!
