So, after long hours of research, and a 25 minute drive, I finally got my Black Ghost Knife fish... I was so pleased to see it swimming about merily... I turned the lights out that night and what do I find the next morning? The tail and only the tail sticking out of my Senegal Bichirs mouth! My Bichir's about 10" and this ghost knife was about 3"! A $15 feeder fish was all he was! I was so upset!

LOL, Hey you've never treated yourself to a nice steak and lobster dinner??? Sorry bout your luck man. Not too long ago I bought 8 Giant Danios to go with my Oscar that is only like 5-6 inches long. Well I guess the Danios looked a little bigger in the store because within a week I was down to ONE Danio. Might as well have bought some guppy feeders for 10 cents a piece! Oh well.....

sorry to hear that, but i did laugh when i read it.

You put a 3" fish in with a 10" predator, and are surprised it was eaten?

my thoughts exactly!

i don't understand why you are surprised surley even a tiny bit of research would have showed this would be the consequence

Its very easy to make fun of someone who doesnt have as much exprience as you. This person has learnt a lesson he wont forget. How many of you had to learn this the same way???? Come on be honest

your right, i have never actually made this mistake, however i had made plenty and it is s##t when someone takes the mickey.
Sorry PRW1988 for being mean and taking the mickey.
However what you did was still wrong :(

Of course people make mistakes - in life in general.
I however find it hard to understand or forgive mistakes when it involves lives.
There's categorically no excuse for not doing research on the animals we wish to care for.

I'll be honest - I have never made such a "mistake" when it involves a life.

Your telling me that in all the time you have been keeping fish you have never been the cause of ones death, Because i dont belive anyone can say that

Never through such gross negligence of common sense on the part of the OP.

It's akin to keeping a rabbit in with a tiger and being surprised the bunny ends up as lunch.

theres mistakes and theres mistakes though

a small thin bodied fish with virtually no defences that can quite easily fit into the mouth of a large predatory fish you have.

if you showed someone who doesn't know the first thing about fish these two animals and told them a birchir is predatory, i bet 90% of them would put money on him eating him. it doesn't take an expereinced aquarist or even any research, just a modicum of common sense which is what is clearly lacking here.

no none of us are perfect, but would you put a kitten in with a lion and expect them to be friends??

please don't argue! Everyone makes mistakes and yes it did involve a life and it could have been avoided but the lesson is learnt and hopefully they will never do it again. i love animals and have very luckily not caused a death by my own carelessness but I decided what i wanted and researched tankmates etc before setting out to buy my fish. all i can say is research research research especially if you have a predatory fish like that.

Its not like that at all.

Fishkeeping is a specialist field and its only because your familiar with it that you thin everyone should know these things. you all being very elitest and snobby.

He probabkly thought 3" was big enough for the fish not to be concidered as food. He probably is used to feeding small feeder fish like Guppies ect.
