Following on from another thread the whole light unit in the lid of my small 21.6 litre hexagon tank is gone, I got a bulb and it doesn't work and had someone look at it and all the plastic is burning!!!

If I bought LED strip lights and cut em to fit in there in a line where the pervious light was would they be suitable for plant groth though? I am at a loss of what I need to buy and am getting stressed!!!!

Any links to what to buy in online shops or ebay would be useful. I don't have loads to spend and can't find anything.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLEAR-SEAL-PYGMY-LIGHT-UNIT-FOR-FISH-TANK-SMALL-TANKS-15W-WATT-BULB-AQUARIUM-/230744893258?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item35b977a74a

is that any good, would it just attach to the hood

no, don't do it. that is 240v and not ideal for a small fish tank
what you want is something that runs on 12v
why not go for a cold cathode tube such as these

note you will need a 12v transformer to run them and one that runs at no more than 500ma

Thanks, that is too big I think, I have only 8 inches of space in the llid to put a light. The lid is a funny shape and half of it is the door the other half used to have the pump so has a cover under it and the middle is the only place I can put something.

What about this:

My only thing is how do I put this together? know I could stick it in the hood with glue and cut the led to size but what about attaching that to the adaptor? How do I do that. It looks like two wires, do I just wonde them round eachother, that doesn't seem safe.

I just found this:

Is this a whole proper unit and all I need to do is attach it to the hood, pop in my T5 6W bulb and plug it in?

out of those choices I'd go with the circular LED set up.
that would look quite cool above you little tank

huh???? What circular led setup? It's a strip of 24 led lights and as stated the tank has no room for a circle of any sort.I'll sort it myself but thanks anyway.

The item in the link is just the "ballast" you would have to add a bulb of the same wattage and bulb type (t5, t6, t8) and attatch it to the hood :good:

Thank you, that's all I needed to know. I have the tube as I bought one today and it takes the same tube as my previous ballast. I'll go for that then, attach it to my hood and add the light.

My sister used my name on here recently to post and annoyed a few people. Since then where I perviously had frinds and had replies to my posts now it's like tumbleweed when I post so I thank you for replying to me.

If people are ignoring you, thats very childish
Hope all goes well for you :good:
(N.B. Make sure the bulbs are'nt in contact with the plastic of the hood, as they can get very hot (especially t8's)
