Hello all,
First off I better say Hi as this is my first post, I've recently got back into fish keeping due to an offer I couldn't refuse on a tank. I used to keep fish about 18 years ago until my son thought it was a good idea to throw a marble at my 4ft tank ! Since then I've only had small 2 ft community tank but due to offer I thought I would try my hand at some cichlids.
I would like some help please identifying some fish I purchased with a tank a couple of weeks ago. I re-housed the fish in a new 4ft tank I had prepared and have been trying to identify correctly what the 2 cichlids are. I woke this morning to find the female laying eggs inside a new pot I added only this weekend so I guess they like it !
I just want to make sure I give the young the best chance to survive as the tank is populated with a few other fish + the parents. I have a another tank which is now ready, should I move the pot with the eggs to spare tank or should I leave with the parents and try and collect the young once they have hatched ?
From looking at pictures and some of their previous young ( 4 of these came with the tank) They seem to me to be Jack Dempseys but could some of you experts please confim this.

The picture..

Thanks Again Darren.

They are definately NOT Jack Dempseys haha. Nothing like them. My first thought is that they are Geophagus Brasiliensis. They have the same markings on thew side, the dark spot toward the rear of the body, the blue spangles along the body, the nuchal hump on the male and the dark "scar" stripe vertically through the females eyes. I would say they are Geophagus Brasiliensis, and if they are they are a wonder to keep. I sold my bunch of 5 the other week - really regret doing so. Mine bred every week since i had them. The males tend to get to about 10" tops, with females usually smaller. Beautifull beautifull fish. When i set up my 6ft i'll be getting another group of 5 of these for sure!

Thanks for the replies would it help if I took some photo's of the young they last produced (x4) which are 1-2 inches ?.

Brilliant, after looking up Geophagus Brasiliensis I have to agree with you, I also agree on how beautiful they are and a joy to watch. I'm a little worried about the 10 inches though !!

Thanks very much for all the replies.

Steve

Yes the male Geophagus Brasiliensis get big 12" is not uncommon. They breed like they are the last fish on the planet. They are good parents and can get nippy with tank mates. They dig too and that I found annoying when I kept mine.

Yours look really good.
