Are External Filters Noisy?

i want to change my juwel filter to an external soon, but as the tank is in my room i want to know if they are noisy...

As long as the pump is setup properly and clean. Then no it shouldn't be noisy. The main thing is to get rid of airlocks.

My tetratec external filter is almost silent i can only here a quiet hum if the room is dead silent and i am close to it. it is the quietest external i have owned (even quieter than eheim filters)

My Eheims are near silent, aqua-pros are near silent, the only reason my fluval is noisy is because half the impeller shaft is missing but it still works.

My Eheims are silent ! Unless I'm deaf even with my ear right up to the cannister, it's almost impossible to hear anything. However, clearly if your outlet spray bar is above water level (which is really shouldn't be) you'll hear the water spray/run into the tank.

Just wondering what makes you think you shouldn't have the spray bar above the water line?

I'll agree too, my external (Aqua Vital) is near silent. It's a heck of alot quieter than my Aqua Vital hob!

Curious to know why the spray bar shouldn't be above the water as I thought this allowed aeration? The outlet pipes supplied with my new Eheim aren't long enough to get the spray in the water

Id have thought only to stop it being too noisy. As long is its disturbing the waters surface surely its ok to be just in the water.

It really depends what your after. Aeration can be acheived by surface agitation but that will also dissipate carbon dioxide, which will inhibit plant growth.

Sorry I was too quick and didn't explain myself properly - but for those two reasons exactly

Of course if you don't care much for the dissipation of carbon dioxide and don't mind the noise, then that's all fine.

i make mine give the sound of water for a relaxation...but thats just me...it helps me go to sleep
