Pencil fish to me are boring as $#!+!!!!

If it was me i would look at the tank they came from and replicate it. Then get another tank for their young to go in.

Nice journal, do what I did and get a large echinodorus and plonk it in there. As for the cacs, and neons, they were green neons and small ones at that. I didn't see them eating them, just ripping the tails clean off. I suggest some espei rasboras!

What about adding some Brazilian pennywort? Is a nice and easy plant and comes from the same country as your fish .

I actually like the rock/cave work on the left. You said it didn't work as a cave for you? It looks fine to me, or is it too small?

They recommend to keep this cichlid with pencilfish. Especially wild types should have dimmed light and shady areas so it would be good to get some salvinia.

I do like pennywort so will consider adding some in the near future, the cave I made from the 2 rocks is OK but it is not as big as I would have liked, I have put a coconut cave in for the time being to offer a decent dark cave for the fish.

Looking to get a triangle slate cave made (similar to pic below, but just a single story cave) then put it in a corner bury it inb the substrate and plant HC over the top. Will try my best to hide the front of the cave with substrate so it looks like just a natural hole in the ground.

I had enough of tannins in the brackish tank with the bog wood, crystal clear water is my thing to tell the truth its your fault anyway because you were the reason I bought 500ml of Purigen lol

Thanks, a long way to go yet but things seem to more along quickly with the tanks I have had so fingers crossed.
I was thinking about dropping the big Amazon Sword that is in my other tank in this tank but it would put everything else in the shade, and I would like to get a carpet growing over the slate cave once I can get hold of some HC (if I ever find any at a reasonable price)

You will have to be careful if they are wild caught fish. Try and find out what the sellers water chemistry is and compare it to yours. Such a swing might set them back.

Wild fish also often have a completely different temperament, aka more agressive than domestic ones. This is something to take into account when looking for tank mates.

Well the fish are in now, collected them at 4pm today. The breeder I bought them from had a garage with about 20-30 tanks set up full of all different types of Small Cichlids, he did manage to drop the female on to the carpeted floor when puting her in the bag but no damage done as far as I am aware!! gave me a scare tho

Lights are off to allow them to settle and they are busy exploring the new surroundings The guy did mention that the female looked like she was ready to breed as she is quite a bright yellow so hopefully she will. Also I used 50% RO water before I put the fish in as my tap water PH comes out at 8.2 so it's going to cost me a £5er a week for my 50% water change, O well.

Hope to get some pictures of the fish up tomorrow once the lights turn on.

Yikes on the drop. I had a platy jump ship during a gravel to sand change, and found her pretty dead looking, popped her in the water, and she has dropped fry 3 times. Sure your girl is fine

You should have seen my face when he dropped her! I was going to ask for a hefty discount but he gave me a free Coconut cave to keep me sweet lol

I was only joking he gave me the Coconut before he dropped her! And dont worry if she ends up dead in the next week I will be getting a refund no doubt about that.
