Hi,

I know that the answer to this question will differ according to the types of fish kept but what is the optimum amount of water current for an aquarium?

Andy

It all depends on the size of the tank. For example if you have a 10g and you used whisper power filters you would get the whisper power filter 20 but I'm not sure if it is to powerful but it isn't in my 10g but I have all fish that like a strong current and this filter filters 10-20g and at my lps they said its all ways a good idea to get a filter that starts with how many gallons the tank is because its good to overfilter. Like in my long 20g I have a whisper power filter 40 and it filters 20-40g so it all depends on the type of fish you have like if you have a pleco they like a strong current.

Hey Andy,

there are no set rules for this but it is better to overfilter (obviously) and to observe your fish with the current you have. Some fish like to swim against the current but if you observe your fish you will see if the current is too strong if they cant swim against it at all.

:)

It really depends on the fish you keep.

Gourami prefer very still water, while white cloud mountain minnows will be happy in a river tank with as much flow as you can give them.

Over filteration is the way forward imo. I run the Ehiem 2128 Thermo which is good upto 135 gallon & my tank is 70 gallon. I used to use the spray bar provided which pushed the outflow down the surface length of the tank. For a start I noticed my Neons where all hiding behind a piece of bogwood & some fish where being pushed about. So now I have taken the spray bar off & just have the out flow tube pointing on an angle to hit 2 sides of the tank before it runs down the length. Thats the best thing I ever did. Every fish looks very happy.

Water is crystal clear!
