Hi Guys,

Seem to have lost my notes on my 4ft Aquariums calculations... Need to work out the volume again so I can dose my plant ferts.

Please can someone check my stats: Length 120cm x High 50cm x Width 38cm = 228 Litres / 50.15 UK Gallons

I have cobbles and gravel to deduct but not sure how I work it out now been years since I had to do this?

Any tips, please :thanks:

L xWxH in cm divided by 1000 is volume in litres. Could use calculator on this site, at the top.
To calculate for substrate measure its height then use your width and length to calculate the volume of substrate

To subtract the substrate, just measure the height of the water from the mean level of the gravel and calculate your volume as above.

Assuming that the substrate is perfectly flat, you could measure the distance from the top of the substrate to the top of the water. That would give you the height of the column of water and then multiply by the width and length to find the volume.

But, since most tanks have a sloping substrate, you would want to find the mean (average) height of the substrate and measure from there to get the mean (average) height of the water column. Since one end of the substrate might be 3 inches thick, but the other end might be 6 or 7 inches thick, you'd have to find the mean thickness of the substrate.
