Aquarium snails

Can you put aquarium snails in a pond or are they warm water lovers?
I've made loads of posts today and had no replies. Have I been sent to coventry?

Well I might maybe kinda sorta in a way be able help you. What kind of snails are you talking about?

Do you mean Apple Snails?

If so, I have seen them sold as Coldwater snails, but they tolorate temperatures between 18 and 28 celcius. NEVER below. According to www.applesnail.net

Be very cautious adding any aquarium snails to outdoor ponds. Right now Florida is having major problems in their waterways from people releasing apple snails into the wild (I was just reading an article about it the other day) -- it's never a good idea ro release non-native species into the wild because you don't know how they will affect the eco-system in the area (competing with native species for food, etc.)

I meant curly snails (ramshorn?). Some people say put excess ones on the compost but that seems a bit cruel

Ramshorn Snails originate from lakes, ponds, and swamps. They stay in shallow waters with a lot of vegetation. Two to four inches of open air space above the waterline in the aquarium is required as these snails need open air to breathe. Ramshorn Snails are very peaceful animals and should not be housed with any other animals that would like to make a meal of them.

Brill! Thanks, I'll pop them in our feeder pool which is shallow and fairly warm. By feeder I mean it feeds the main pond not feeder as in feed them to other creatures.

thing is in england if we get a cold night wont they all die? not like u guys in florida where its nice and warm we have to wear trousers and jumpers most of the year!

lol me bad just thinking of warmer climate but are tropical snails ok in english weather coz i have tons of snails and would be nice to see some in the pond if you guys think they wudnt get killed off

Liveaquaria.com says that the lowest temperature a ramshorn, mystery, and apple snail can handle is 68°F.

Oooh noooo nooo me thinks my snails would not like the ice which forms on our ponds in the winter. Brrrrrrr!!
