Hi,

I know people who add 'aquarium salt' to their freshwater tanks and i was wondering
what exactly are its effects on fish or what its supposed to do to the water? I've heard
its supposed to help their 'osmoregulation' or something like that.

Does anyone know what this 'aquarium salt' is supposed to do and is it good for your
fish??

thankss=]

though it is a quite complicated chemical reaction, put simply, it empties your pockets with no benefit to your fish. :hyper:

It is true that salt can be used as as mild antibacterial. and has proven use in fighting things like ICK/whitespot. unless your fish should be kept in brackish water, it will do nothing, and most likely do harm to some of your stock. the Key is in the name "Fresh Water", and that, really is what they should be kept in!

some time back a member called aquarium salt, "FISHKEEPERS SNAKE OIL" , and i think that sums it up.

Not really widly used today, but I always considered it an expensive tonic. I would use Marine salts for brackish fish sp. or certain ailments, and for everyday use for Nothos (Velvet, Oödinium) I just use common Cooking Salt (not Table salt)
