I was always under the impression it totally depends on your tank size and how many 'real' plants you have...

Mine is never on for more that 4/5 hours a day (100L, 5 plants), anymore than that and i suffer with algae outbreaks.

Totally depends on what you are keeping in the tank. What are you keeping and what lighting have you got.

If you have a planted tank, the general consensus seems to be about 8-10 hours a day. Although as mentioned above, this may need to be managed depending on natural light into the tank affecting algea blooms. Algae can also be managed with Shrimps and Algea eating fish or maybe adding some fast growing plants that will take up some of the nutrients feeding the algae. My new tank is only just getting established so not sure what timings I will be using with this one, but my old was certainly on for 10 hours a day with no direct natural light and it was fine.

mine are on a 6 hour full light cycle and a 2 hour moonlight cycle from 12-8pm ... 9-12am i get good light through my bedroom window
