How long should i keep my aquarium lights on for?

I currently have no live plants in my tank - just plastic ones and ceramic ornaments.
I have read and received conflicting advice about how long I should keep them on for, anywhere between 4 and 14 hours!

I currently have them on a timer for 8 hours a day between 2pm and 10pm, however I have just returned from a 12 day holiday to find patches of green algae on the aquarium glass.

Should I reduce the time the lights are on for?

how long do others leave their lights on for?

The aquarium lighting gives no benifit at all for the fish in your tank, they will manage quite happily with the ambiant light from your room. So just turn them on when you want to see your fish & remember more light = more algea so without plants to compete I should think you are in for an algea suprise very soon.
