You can have more than one foam insert in the filter. Then when you replace one, there will still be another working.

That's a good idea, too. It would be a little tidier than using the filter floss, I would think.

Another good thing about doing that would be that it would easily fill the entire filter from corner to corner. When using the floss, it tends to form into a ball when you rinse it out and then you have to fool with it to get it to cover the bottom sponge.
