Aquaclear 30 media placement...

You can have 3 sponges or ceramic beads and 2 sponges. It doesn't really matter. I just liked 3 sponges and it gave me a spare sponge if I ever needed an established filter for a new or quarantine tank.
Ok! I think I will do that... Makes my life way easier with cleaning... And its cheaper

I still use the original ceramics that came with the AC filter. I just rinse in tank water.

Do you think the aquaclear biomax filter inserts are good? Or should I use fluval biomax?
Just use the rings.

I ditched sponges once I found out when they clog, they rise up out of the filter, push off the lid, and expose the ceramic media to air....this was with weekly cleaning of the sponges, too.

I'm overwhelmed with decisions... Maybe I should just stick with the bio rings to avoid clogging and to keep it simple... I dont want to get all sponges and then find out the hard way that was a bad idea... So if I keep it at just bio rings there wont be clogging and its easy to clean.

I would stick with your plan of using the sponge, with bagged ceramic media on top (carbon not needed), see how it works out for you....you can always change out the media (once the tank is cycled and mature) to suit your liking and needs.

You're the one that said not to use sponges... I have a headache... Not joking either lol.

Many, many people use the sponges, and have great success with them....I just learned after being in the hobby for a few years that I did not need them.

Well, better to know now than later I guess instead of starting in a few years lol.

If you stick with the hobby long enough, you will learn that there are many different ways to successfully keep happy, healthy fish...what works well for some may not work well for others....there are the basics (cycling a tank, not overfeeding, proper stocking etc), and then there are the little nuances that make the hobby fun, enjoyable, and a hands-on learning experience.

Yes, you are are totally correct. I agree with everything you just said. I just always try to find the best things to do without spending a lot lol... I tend to be a bit ocd with things like this
