my temperate apple snail has started to float at the top of the tank.
he is in his shell with the door closed, and doesnt even try to grab the sides.
when i first saw i gently nudged him back to the bottom of the tank but he floated up again.
he is in a temperate tank with three variatus platys and is being fed half an algae wafer every 2 days(though whether its him eating it or the v. platys i dont know). 3 sides of the tank are left with algae on and i do a 25-30% water change every week.
thanks.

He is most likely dead. Try smelling him, dead snails have the worst stench ever. It smells "rotty"

he smells a bit but not as much as the shells in my sisters did once her goldfish had eaten the snails (the only survivor is the floater, who was moved for his own safety into my tank.)

He does sound dead to me and if he passed recently, I doubt the smell will be as strong as it will be in a few days (which really is not a good smell). If he doesn't perk up by tomorrow, I'd remove him. How long have you had him?

less than a year but he's been shunted between almost all the tanks in my house in that time. if he was one of mine to begin with (me and my sister got 2 each at the same time) he was in a 36 litre, then moved because my fish were eating algae wafers and it was making them ill, so he and his friend went into my sisters approx 165 litre tank where her 2 snails were, then my sisters goldfish decided they liked the taste of snails and ate 3 of them so he was moved to my other sisters tank (which was originally my 36 litre) before being moved into my 'new' tank (it had been running with fish for about a month) because she didnt like snails.
sorry the tank and snail history of my house is rather complex.

Sometimes they float when they've taken alot of air onboard. But I do agree it sounds like it might be dead/in the process of dying. Although when they die they normally don't hold their door closed. They hold themselves into the shell with muscles, when they die the muscles stop working and the snail sorta flops out a bit.

How long has he been floating for?

Yup, when snails die rigor mortise kicks in and they close their "door" all the way. What are your parameters (ie temp, PH, hardness, ammo, nitrIte, nitrAte ect)? And have you been using medications in the tank?
