Anyone Starting Out?

yes was planning a water change this afternoon but thought i would post before results first . would a 25% or 50% water change be best?

i did a 60 % one when my tank measured 0.25ppm and it made no difference...so make sure you recheck it after...as i said all my mollies died at 0.25ppm within 2 days.

wow!!! just went to open a new bottle of water conditioner and remove the metal(ish) film that seals it and had the biggest electrical crack/shock onto my fingers. seriously freaked me out (and said a few choice words)

just in the cupboard. never experienced anything like it not even static shocks are that strong. no worries though...now open and half way through my water change

did you only do a water change when it reached 0.25 or a water change every day?

just done an "after water change" reading ( 1 hour after ) and ammonia etc all zero so well happy. :good:

excellent...i'm noe expert yet..but i'm learning...i would just do an AMM test every day if it were me...you need to keep those levels at 0 x

I recieved some good news today. I've got Monday off next week so I can go and get my plants and gravel then :D

My ammonia was dispatched today by first class post, so it should be here by Monday too, so I can start cycling then! Woohoo!

Does anyone know about digital thermometers? I bought a glass thermometer for my tank today and the suction cup broke within 10 seconds of opening it. I'm not fussed since I was planning on having two (one for in the tank, another for measuring my bucket water), but despite it saying easy to read on the packet, it's actually not :p

Also, I'll ask another question here to avoid starting a new thread. I turned my filter on today for a few seconds just to make sure it worked (since I'm not sure how long I have to return it if it turned out it didn't work). I know you've got to keep the water surface moving to keep it oxygenated. The filter water creates a slight ripple at the surface, but I also have an air pump which creates a nice stream of slightly noisy bubbles. I don't mind the sound of bubbles (I find it somewhat therapeutic), but do you think it'd be alright to have the pump on a timer so it's only on during the day? It's in a bedroom, you see.

Edit: My cycle only starts on Monday if my test kit arrives by then :p

I will do a water change every day and test before and hour after to keep a record of whats going on to keep at zero

my heater has a guide to what the temp it is..you turn the dial on the top to set the temp required..my tank also has a strip thermometer on the front of the tank...they both are within 2 deg of each other.
I asked this question about can i turn the bubbles off at night..and i havent yet had an answer, hopefully someone will enlighten us soon.
you can always start your cycle log on here tonight, i started mine with what makes of things i have and PRE cycle readings etc. what you want to stock in your finished tank, it will also help other newbies have a guide to work to x
roll on Monday then!! :good:
NB... then each night you log your details you click edit on your first post and it will add it to the same log x

My heater doesn't have that. I left it running today just in tap water to make sure it works okay, and I seem to have the dial in position keeping the water around 29.5-30.5 degrees, so I'll keep it there for the cycling period.

Bought a few new airstones to try out today, small round ones instead of one long one, and they're much better though I need to get an airline splitter so I can have one in each corner. They're much quieter, but I've since had a rethink and I plan to reposition my tank next to my bed for various safety and comfort reasons, so sound levels are a bit more of an issue now.

my fluval is lovely..i love the bubbles sound...may get one for our bedroom :kana:

I randomly stumbled across a post in another thread suggesting that the rippling caused by the filter is enough to keep the water oxygenated, so I think I'm probably going to get a timer for my air pump.

Air pumps are not needed in tanks they are cosmetic as the filter will provide the ripple of the surface, so yes you put it on a timer. Having a pump on during a cycle is a good thing mind as at 30c there is less oxygen in the water so the pump will provide more and help the bacteria :good:
