Anyone Starting Out?

Hi There, i've kept fish before, but just started up a new tank after about 6 yrs away.... i'm very impatient so its been hard not to add fish straight away :(
I'm now in my third week, and glad to say i now have fish swimming happily about..

Overload...

I too bought mine second hand but from Facebook, had the same prolems buying replacement parts for the lighting box... New Tubes, New Starters, then a new Motor thingy!!! in the end it was a waste of money as my dad stripped it apart and found a small peice of plastic which was stopping the conecction !!! Grrrr
All good now and up and running.

Yea if that was all the issues I would have been happy, however in my case the light tubes were shards, the starters insides rattling around and the motor housings on the filters had cracked, that said, could have been a lot worse it did go through a car crash (literally) getting here!

overload...car crash, i do hope you or anyone else wasnt hurt...god bles

I am also on day 2 of fishless cycling, had decided to give up fishkeeping some months ago, but, here i go again...thankfully had kept tank, and all things required, so this time has been priceless! literally
not sure about stocking yet, still deciding, as my daughter wants a black moor coldwater fancy goldfish.
I will however be trying to setup another very small tank for a betta later on. I have set this tank up with 3 sponges instead of 2, so i may be able to jump start another tank on fishless cycle...as i am only planning a very small tank for the betta...about a 5 gallon one. Looking at a hexagon one or something simular for the corner of my kitchen. or maybe a small bow front tank we'll see. If this tank (64L interpet fish box 64) cycles in 6 weeks i may get a new one for the betta sooner

I just started my tank about 5 weeks ago. Didn't go the fishless cycle as I was too anxious to get fish in. They are all doing well. We lost a few within hours of putting our second batch it but I think that was the fish and not me. I have tetras, mollies and platies. Going to be adding some guppies soon to complete the tank along with an algae eater.

VT - are you doing tests etc each day to check on water quality? I would be worried about getting lots of fish into a tank which has not yet been cycled to cope with the initial load.... How did you acclimatise the 2nd batch of fish to your tank?

Miles

if anyone has some spare media for my Fluval U2 i would very much apreiciate it ?? :D this is gonna take forever ... my ammonia STILL hasnt arrived!!! grrrrr :grr:

ohh..just noticed it's corrected my GENDER back to female..... :hyper:

How is everyone getting on with levels?
I added my fist lot of Ammonia yesterday. Today its the same Amm = 4ppm but my PH has dropped to 8.0 when it was 8.3 last night? is there a reason for that?

I'm starting out!

Bought my tank today, but unfortunately the ornaments I'd set my heart on aren't available in any of my local shops so I'm forced to sit around waiting til they arrive. I'm annoyed that I didnt buy myself the other bits I needed when I was at the shop today, so it's gonna be a week before I can decorate my tank and start the cycle going.

My tank came with a bottle of stuff that claims to introduce all the bacteria the tank needs in three days, so I'm planning on using that when I set up my tank next week, adding a tiny amount of ammonia if I can get hold of it, then adding some neons and maybe some shrimp the next week depending on test results. Sort of a half fish-in/fishless cycle. Yay or nay?

can't you start the cycle with just gravel and filter/heater then?? surely ornaments wouldnt make a difference?

Ummmm...apparently these are useless..you need to buy Ammonia from the internet (i have the Kleenoff household cleaner 9.5%) can get website if needed, OR you can get Ammonia from Boots or Homebase too.

You can't put fish in a fishless cycle..they will die...and Tetras are not very good starter fish anyway. The ammonia levels would kill them, i got good info in the begginers section...I had 3x Mollies in my tank after 5 days of setting it up...they died 2 days later :(

FISHLESS cycle all the way! xx

I had wondered whether it was actually any good. Was hoping to get hold of some ammonia anyway, but I guess adding this stuff as well can't hurt.

I guess I could've done it with just the gravel, but too late now since I won't be having another day off work til next week now to go and get some.

If I ordered some ammonia online and did it with a tank with just water in it then added the decorative stuff later, would that be a good idea or no?

most supermarkets do bags of gravel now...i seen some in Wilko's today too...and if you order Ammonia online why not order Gravel too?? most do free delivery over a certain price. x :good:

My cycle in a bucket (due to tank cracking) is on day 2, the upside of mature media, half the ammonia has been processed in under 12 hours!
