Shouldn't we be doing this anyway?

This is prompted by @anewbie and @GaryE discussion on Nannomostus species.
This paper proposes that all the geographical color variants of Apistogramma caeti should be treated as separate species until such a point sufficient information is available to lump them all together as one species or truly a complex of multiple species.

As a hobby shouldn't we be doing this from the start? I've seen too many threads from hobbyists wanting to cohabitate different species of Apistogramma together.

 
I am not involved with almost any cichlids and have not kept Apistos. But I am always curious about the science and i tool a quick look at the paper above. What I wandered about was the date of the paper which is 2006/ The paper has been updated since then and I would suggest this might be the better version as it was last updated in 2024:

The paper is ~20 years old; my understanding is since it was written genetic testing has in fact merged many colour variants believed to be different species. This has happened with many 'sp' species of apistogramma as well as many species of kribs which were originally thought to be different species.
 
Some of this gets back to the issue of the polarization of splitters vs lumpers among taxonomists. And DNA has not always settled the matter one way or another.

In Nannostomus, for example, N. beckfordi's numerous variants have at one time or another all been identified as species and given names--N. anomalus (the name Innes uses in his books), N. aripirangensis, N. simplex, and N. surinami, among others, were all subsequently revised as synonyms to N. beckfordi in Stan Weitzman's revision of Nannostomus in 1975, and that has held to this day. The DNA evidence since that revision has not been conclusive and at times has been confounding, so the revision holds...for the time being anway. The same is true for the many variants of N. marginatus, N. trifasciatus, N. eques and N. unifasciatus. Prior to Stan's revision, Nannostomus had been broken up into three genera--Nannostomus, Nannobrycon and Poecilobrycon--and numerous variants now considered synonyms were given specific names.

I've always tried to keep populations of Nannostomus separate. But unlike the situation in killies and apistos, collection data is rarely known with any degree of specificity, or accurately reported.

That's how it should work. Treat them as separate species until we know for sure.
Still though geographical color variants are often locale specific and they too should be treated as a separate distinct population.
 
Taxonomy ultimately depends on interpretation. If we have an evolutionary significant population, well, what's significant to you may not be significant to me.

Sometimes, we get cut and dried stories behind a name change. Pelvicachromis taeniatus Woure was a dwarf Cichlid along the usual pattern for its group. Only it's larger, and has some colour pattern differences. When Anton Lamboj researched the past work done on these fish, he decided they were a distinct species wrongly placed in taeniatus. He could have included them in P kribensis. The research and revisiting descriptions and preserved specimens showed the Cameroon P taeniatus had been previously described as P kribensis. The Nigerian and Beninois fish in the were different, and had been described as P taeniatus. But he named the distinct Woure fish Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi.

I'd argue that very few of the hobbyists who had kept and bred the fish had any disagreement with that. The fish was different to keep, and a lot of people were questioning its identity. To unscientific us, it seemed like something different. The work done on them backed that up.

Let's imagine you reject evolution and think all of these fish are one species, in spite of the evidence. You could cross them without any worries. They might in a few generations become sterile. They might soldier on, unlike any fish in nature. I kept and bred them as taeniatus Woure, and would not combine them with taeniatus Moliwe, or Lobe, or Bipindi or whatever. When a scientist revisited the group to look at old research and to do new work, the location name proved more informative than the species name.

With killies, we've had similar cases. What it looks like on the outside, and what it is on the inside don't always match. There have been cryptic species. In 2018 a group caught a little Aphyosemion that looked like both Aphyosemion coeleste and A. citrineipinnis, 2 well known species. Research showed it to be e, and it was named Aphyosemion cryptum - hiding in plain sight. If I'd found it based on the photos, I would have misidentified it. If I had crossed it with citrineipinnis, I would have caused it to be lost.

If you breed fish and have access to origin info, it only makes sense to use it.
