I saw some in Maidenhead Aqustics and always wanted some because they look a lovely neon blue in pictures. However in the shop they had no colour really. Do they brighten up when in a home environment? Is it ok to just have 3 together?
I have them. The females don't really hold any colour which is what may have been in the shop? The males normally sell first because they do have a really nice blue tint of them. Especially in the right light.
If you thinking of getting some, get the right m to f mix though. Don't just get all males because they look nice. You'd probably want about 6.
I have found them to be quite tender, so I would only say to put them in a mature tank.
There are a lot of factors that affect their colour, they tend to be a lot more dull in the shops, feed them well, care for them well and they'll colour up nicely, but as previously stated the males possess more colour than the females.
A group of 6 would be the minimum and yes, they colour up brilliantly within a week or two of getting them back from the shop despite the fact they almost always look quite drab in fish shops.
