Well as I said before I got mine from a pond stocking compnay so their wherent any legal issues. My 4bluegill are fine with the 2 plecs which are about 8in long.If you get blugill from the wild you may have issues with the change of enviorment and stress but good care should overcome that. Also if they are wild caught then I would suggest you have a live food option for about a month, what worked good for me was wax worms which are the larve of moths, you can get alot from bait shops or order them from outdoor companys like Cabels and Bass Pro Shops. You dont need a heater for wild species but I have one to keep the tank warm of the plecs and for faster growth, had mine for about 4 years in July and they are quite big about 6-8inches never had mine spawn but they have gone threw the motions of it.

So no worries then about wild caught fish being put in with a pleco as far as parasites go then?

Yes, you would have to worry about parasites and disease when you introduce wild fish into your fish tank. But then, you should be worrying about the same things when you introduce any fish into your established home system. That's why quarantine tanks are so highly recommended.

How long do you need to quarantine fish, and how elaborate does the setup need to be. Gravel, decor, etc?

This actually sounds interesting. I never had a tank large enough before (How many big mouth bas will fit into a 20 gal long?) But since I am set to get 2 55 gals next week...maybe I'll do a Mississippi River theme. People do river themes all the time, Amazom and Chinese etc. Hmm, bream...channel cats...yada yada...well, I don't know how well channel cats would go, it is only 55 gals. Still, I don't think bream get too big.

Just kidding, really. I am too addicted to angels and oscars. Guess I'll stick to Amazon river themes. I could pretend I live in Brazil. :D

Funny stuff, my wife's favorite are angels, mine are oscars. Will still keep oscars in one 55 gallon, 2 nice ones and a channel cat with some plecos. But figure its time to do something different in the other one, a bit less expensive, and something newer than angels.

Thought I'd update this post. I haven't gone fishing since I was a kid, but borrowed a rod and reel recently and caught 4 bluegill and a 4 inch large mouth bass using non barbed hooks so they can be taken out easier. They are doing super well in the tank and look very good. Their favorite food is freeze dried krill, won't touch anything else that isn't live and I hate using live food.

The 4 inch largemouth still will only eat the freeze dried krill, but the bluegill will now eat the small floating cichlid pellets. Much easier and cheaper. Man, do bass strike hard and fast, really neat to see, we call him little lightning.
