Hi folks,

I've noticed some strange looking things under one of the leaves of a Java Fern. My first thought is snail eggs but these are usually more globular?

Anyone know what they are?

Tank is stocked with 2 Apple Snails, 6 Black Phantom Tetras, 1 Dwarf Gouramis and a fair few other snails (little buggers).

Cheers

They are called sori, they produces plant spores.

^^^agree, this is the way Java ferns re produce. It will often happen to old leaves or changes in condition in the aquarium.

Thanks for the replies.

This is the first time I've had Java Fern so they're new to me. Thanks for the info :)

and a fair few other snails (little buggers).

Get yourself some assassin snails, they will soon clear them out

I've been considering them but I've read that they will even have a go at my Apple Snails even though they're much larger.

If the other snails become a big problem I'll move the Apple Snails to another tank and get some Assassin Snails :)

The other snails only reproduce greatly when provided with enough food to consume, usually they tend to eat fish food, and too many snails in your tank is usually only occurs when you over feed.

I try to be careful with the amount I feed. I do tend to drop a couple of algea wafers in for the Apple Snails at night which can't help.

The tank is fairly new and most of the snails have hitched their way in and they're all tiny at the moment. I'll take your advice and limit the food some more to try and stop them growing.
